Corinthian Project:

~Poseidon Speech~

Poseidon is the Greek God of the Sea and Horses. His name translates to Lord or Husband of the Earth. He is the son of Kronos and Rhea.  Poseidon is the oldest of all the Gods. His brothers are Zeus and Hades. His Wife is Amphitrite. They had a half fish, half God son named Triton. Poseidon has a temple located at Cape Sounion in Attica. He was greatly feared for his moody, unpredictable, and warlike personality. His Roman form is Neptune.

When Poseidon and Athena were competing for the peoples popularity, they had a competition. Whichever God could make the most useful object would get the city named after them. Poseidon made a horse while Athena made the olive tree. The people favored Athena’s olive tree over Poseidon’s horse. The city became known as Athens instead of Poseidonia.

Poseidon was celebrated at the festival of Isthmian Games. It was held in the spring of the second and fourth years of each Olympiad at his sanctuary on the Isthmus of Corinth. The event was a series of athletic and musical competitions in honor of the Sea God. The festival was held by us, the Corinthians. It was open to all Greeks and was very popular with the Athenians.
